History of the World in Two Hours - Premieres October 6 at 9 PM (ET/PT) on HISTORY

From the Big Bang to the present day, 13.7 billion years of epic history will be told in just 120 minutes…

HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN TWO HOURS is the story of humankind from the very beginning of time – from the birth of the Universe and Earth to the dawn of life, from the fall of the dinosaurs to the rise of man, from the Stone Age to Silicon Valley. Each beat in the story will reveal a surprising connection to our world today. The new special, from the producers of Life After People, premieres Sunday, October 2 at 9 pm on H2 and encores Thursday, October 6 at 9 pm ET on HISTORY.

This thrilling, fast-paced film examines the biggest moments over the course of billions of years – the Big Bang, the birth of our solar system, the emergence of the first primates, the voyage of Columbus, the invention of the steam engine and beyond – and demonstrates how everyone and everything are all connected.

Our modern world holds surprising clues to the distant past. HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN TWO HOURS demonstrates that all life forms are descended from the lowly bacteria, and shows that if not for grass, the primates would never have climbed down from the trees and learned to walk upright. The Great Pyramids were built with material made from 50 million-year-old seashells left behind when modern-day Egypt was submerged beneath the sea. All the dots are connected: from donkeys that made trade possible to the spread of disease and religion, from the invention of gunpowder to today’s political landscape.

Chilean Mine Rescue - Premieres October 13 at 8 PM (ET/PT) on Smithsonian Channel

It was the agonizing fight for survival by thirty-three men that captivated the entire world. Underground, it is a story of starvation, despair and danger around every turn. Above ground, it is a race against time by an international team as they re-invent mine rescue in real time to get the men out. Told by those who lived through it, CHILEAN MINE RESCUE premieres one year to the day of the historical rescue of the 33 miners trapped under half a mile of rock at the San Jose, Chile mine.

During late summer of 2010, the world became riveted by a life and death drama that gripped the imagination and called upon astonishing feats of engineering science and human endurance. Since we began extracting minerals from the Earth, these types of subterranean ordeals have many times ended tragically. But, in this case, the story evolved in a way that was inspiring, and ultimately triumphant. CHILEAN MINE RESCUE goes behind the headlines to examine not just what happened during those 68 remarkable days, but how and why. Combining first person accounts, compelling footage of the trapped miners, 3-D animation and dramatic recreations, Smithsonian Channel tells the story behind the extraordinary rescue of “Los 33.”

The miners were buried deeper, and would need to survive underground longer than in any previous rescue attempt. Only a handful of people in the entire world have the tools and skill to attempt an extraction of men entombed half a mile below the surface. Despite the odds, Chilean Minister of Mining Laurence Golbourne galvanized an international rescue effort, with teams from Australia, South Africa, and the United States, the cost of which was estimated at $20 million dollars.

Interviews show the families’ joy at the miners’ return, and the changes faced by men who are now – one year after the rescue – international celebrities.

The Education of Dee Dee Ricks - 8:30 PM on HBO

A profile in courage and an indictment of America’s health care system, THE EDUCATION OF DEE DEE RICKS begins in 2008, when this self-described “vain” woman and single parent to two boys was diagnosed with aggressive stage II breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. She decided to document her experience for her children, in case anything happened to her. During her successful recovery, Ricks receives her first medical bills. Although able to afford the payments, she is disturbed by the realization that many women are bankrupted by the expense.

Ricks subsequently meets with Dr. Harold P. Freeman, founder and president of Harlem’s Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care, believed to be the only cancer center in the nation to provide or ensure access to timely cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment to all patients, irrespective of their ability to pay, and she pledges to raise $2.5 million for the clinic. (According to the American Cancer Society, African-American women are less likely to develop breast cancer, but 37 percent more likely to die, from the disease than their white counterparts.)

At the clinic, Ricks bonds with Cynthia Dodson, an uninsured African-American breast cancer patient whose resilience and optimism are an inspiration. The two become as close as sisters, supporting each other through treatment. As Ricks celebrates her last chemotherapy session, she learns that Dodson has spots on her liver and resolves to make sure her friend receives the best care possible, while stepping up her support for the Center. Unfortunately, because Dodson’s diagnosis and treatment came late due to her financial status, her future is in doubt.

The challenges she meets, the revelations she experiences and the friendships she forges turn out to be the ultimate education for Dee Dee Ricks. Reflecting on her new priorities in life, she concludes, “Cancer was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
